3 reasons why I hate porn

file4061261807233OK, I know what you’re thinking: “Another Christian saying they hate pornography? I think I’ll pass.” Well, give me a minute here to make my case with no Bible verses required. I’m talking to you as a Christian, yes, but also as student of human nature, former college student and older sister.

First, porn lies to men. Young men think that scripted porn scenarios are how things are supposed to go. They expect women to like to do the same things female porn stars do. Some guys become so obsessed with porn that they get very upset when a women won’t sleep with them and even a few get violent. Having seen this first hand I do think it has a lot to do with a lot of the rape incidents on college campuses. These guys don’t see women as human beings but as sex objects as a result of regular “adult film” consumption.

I’ll even go so far as to say it has ruined some of the men from older generations as well. There is a major trend in men 50+ who absolutely hate to date/sleep with women their own age. My theory (after some informal research) is that the young, perfect bodies in the videos are making them want to go after ladies much, much younger than they are. These are not men with the body of a 25-year-old either but those visions of what the perfect partner looks like stick with them.

Second, adult films also lie to women. As I said the majority of porn stars have perfect bodies and do all sorts of bizarre, scripted stuff. And you know what? A lot of young women think this is good research for what they are supposed to look and act like. This is because guys seem to like it and they want to be the ideal woman with no thought to what the women themselves might really like.

Third, porn’s addictive. I’m sure you’ve heard the “I can stop anytime I want” excuse when it comes to alcohol or cigarettes. Well, every guy who has crossed my path with a porn problem (too much consumption) has said that exact thing. They’ve gotten to the point where they can’t get the images out of their mind and the desire to watch it becomes all-consuming. Many times desensitization takes over and they have to get more explicit and more violent porn as time goes on because the mainstream stuff just doesn’t do it for them anymore. And you know what? They can’t really stop watching it on their own. They need help and that, in my humble opinion, is the most damaging aspect of pornography.

Am I saying that these three things apply to everyone? Well, no. But what I am saying is that we need to be more careful about what we expose ourselves to. Just because it feels good doesn’t mean it’s good for us and I encourage everyone to be more self-aware.

That’s my two cents. If you want to comment with a rebuttal, there’s a section below. Let’s keep it civil, though, OK?
